Which Chew should I buy?
Chewing is a behaviour that all puppies and dogs naturally love and that can keep them entertained for hours but there are some things that you need to know which we have listed below:
- The good thing is that chewing helps maintain dental health by massaging gums, stops the build up of plaque which prevents tartar from forming, in turn helping to prevent bad breath. For more information on dental care see dental care
- Bear in mind that chews do contribute to overall daily food intake and mealtime feeding should be adjusted as necessary
- Chews are also a great way to reward your dog for good behaviours
- Don’t punish a puppy for chewing – just train them on what is acceptable and unacceptable to chew and praise them for chewing the right thing. Once they are trained on chews they will then be trained not to chew the furniture
Which chew should I choose?
There is a large variety on the market including nylon, plastic, dental, rawhide and natural.
Nylon & Plastic Chews: Nylon and plastic chews are long lasting as their hard texture wears down slowly and will not break or splinter. They are baked in a variety of flavours and sizes to satisfy all tastes and are also good at removing plaque. We also stock a great deal of the Nylabone Range and all items are available by special order. Check out the various options on http://www.nylabone.com/
Natural Treats: These can range from Roast Knuckle Bones to Pigs Ears. These bones are dried bones not cooked bones and dogs love these natural treats. As with any treat, your dog should be supervised while chewing. Do not feed any type of cooked bone to your dog as it can be harmful. Let your pooch sample our new Natralicious dog treat range with products like ostrich and deer jerky along with the regular favourites like porky bits and liver treats this great range is sure to cater to every pets palate.
Rawhide: Rawhide comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and is either compressed (hard) or munchy (soft). It can be basted or smoked for extra flavour. Puppies under 8 months should be given rawhide sparingly as the high protein can cause stomach upsets to their developing digestive system.
Hard rawhide is compressed, making it much tougher and longer lasting. It can cause injury to your dog’s teeth or lips if thrown.
Basted rawhide is always popular with dogs as it adds that variety of flavour. It is recommended that basted products are fed on a non-stainable surface as the colouring can sometimes bleed when the chew is wet.
Munchy rawhide is made from crushed rawhide that is extruded and moulded into a variety of different shapes, sizes and colours. These chews are easily broken down and consumed by dogs with little risk to their safety.
Also, try using chews like Greenies not only will they keep your dog love the taste, it will help keep their teeth and gums healthy. |
