WARM SECURE PET BED
Provide your puppy with a bed of his own from day one, make sure it’s easy to keep clean and you may want to buy a size larger so that it will last your growing pup longer. We love the Rogz range of bedding so be sure to come in and see the wide range we carry. Snuggle Puppies with a heating pad and mechanical heart beat are useful for very young or abandoned puppies.
PUPPY SHAMPOO
Make sure you purchase a puppy specific shampoo as human shampoos can cause skin irritations and adult dog shampoos maybe too strong for a young pup. At PetO we recommend Fido’s Oatmeal shampoo and conditioner, the oatmeal naturally cleans the skin and coat while the baking soda helps to neutralize odours.
FLEA , TICK & WORM CONTROL
Make an appointment with your vet as soon as you get your pup home, your vet will be able to guide you in the right direction for flea control and heart and intestinal worming. At PetO, as we want your pet to be healthy we stock a full range of preventatives including Frontline, Revolution, Advantage, Advocate, Drontal and Heart guard to name a few . These are available over the counter.
ADJUSTABLE NYLON COLLAR, LEAD AND PET TAG
Place a lightweight nylon collar on your pup as soon as possible. Some puppies aren’t too keen on collars at first but be persistent with praise and treats. Also have a pet tag with the pet’s name, your contact number and address of where the puppy will reside. Get your puppy used to a light weight nylon lead and again, use treats and plenty of praise.
For puppy training purposes you may want to invest in a long recall lead used to train your puppy to come back to you.
PUPPY CHEWS
There is a wide selection of puppy chews available and you might want a rope bone which acts like floss for a young chewing puppy or you may like the Nylabone range of puppy tethers like the puppyfish or you may prefer the old trusty pigs ears and rawhide - whatever your choice make sure you stock up and prevent your belongings from becoming tasty chewing delights!
PUPPY TREATS
Training a puppy can never start too early - be sure to have some small quantities of liver treats on hand. At PetO, treats we stock include dried chicken breast, cuddle pup liver snaps and Lovem liver rewards. However, it is important not to go overboard with treats as it may upset their tummy. Also consider using a portion of their daily dry food as treats.
PUPPY TOYS
Letting your puppy play is an important part of development. Have a wide selection of toys that you rotate and don’t have too many out all at once. Puppy Kongs and activity treat balls are great for growing puppies. They are filled with food treats and can keep puppies minds occupied on getting every last treat out. Puppy fish made by Nylabone have also proven to be a durable puppy toy. We also stock a full range of soft, plush, squeaky, grunting, flavoured rubber and latex pet toys - sure to meet the need of any puppy.
FEEDING AND DRINKING EQUIPMENT
A ceramic bowl is a great choice for water and a non skid stainless steel bowl is suitable for food. A huge variety of bowls are available from PetO -plastic, stainless steel, ceramic and stoneware, from plain to funky designs. You may want to add a placemat to your list - puppies are not known for their table manners!
GROOMING EQUIPMENT
You will need a soft brush to get your puppy used to brushing. Rubber brushes are great for smooth coats - you may also want puppy cologne, a small pair of nail clippers, styptic powder (stops bleeding), doggy wipes and a pair of ball tip scissors. Get your puppy used to being groomed frequently at a young age as it will make life easier when your puppy becomes an adult. Depending on the breed you may need ear wash solution. Please speak to our friendly staff for more advice.
TRAVELLING EQUIPMENT
You should use a harness or a carrier when traveling with your puppy. Feel free to bring in your pet so that our experienced staff can fit your puppy to the right carrier or harness. You might also want to think about a car seat cover so no damage happens to your car’s interior. If you require a carrier for plane travel, the Vari Kennel range we stock is any puppy owner’s ‘must have’ accessory.
PUPPY TRAINING PADS
House training your pup can be frustrating but at PetO we have some items sure to make the experience a little easier. Absorbent training mats that come with an attractant are sure to guide your pup in the right direction. These wee mats are super absorbent and larger than a lot of other mats capturing all the urine, so your floors will stay dry. You may want to invest in a quality stain and odour remover. Our favourites are Urine Off that is sure to neutralize any ammonia. You can even purchase a nifty black light to find puppy pee patches on your rugs, carpets or furniture. Bac 2 Nature and SOX are some other products sure to help with stain and odour reduction in your home.
Don’t forget to be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your dog. At PetO we stock a groovy range of poo bag carriers which attach to your dog lead, pooper scoopers are also a necessity for your back yard.
PUPPY CRATES
Some breeders will recommend crate training for your puppy. We stock The Great Crate in a variety of sizes and we also carry a range of puppy play pens in a range of heights from 24”- 48”.
DENTAL CARE
Get your puppy used to having its teeth brushed from a young age - you can use finger brushes with pet tooth paste and we also carry the Triple Pet range of dental equipment; please speak to our staff to brushing tips.
BOOKS
When you first get your puppy everyone who owns a pet will have a different tip for you. Make sure you read up before you pick up your puppy so you know what you are prepared as possible. Our favourite is “Civilising Your Puppy” and “Puppies for Dummies” is another life saver - it covers everything you will need to know.
DRY FOOD STORAGE BIN
Don’t forget to pick up a bin to store food - buying in bulk is more economical and an air tight bin will keep your puppies food fresher for longer.
