Dog Carriers
When you’re off on your holidays or away for the weekend, it is worth considering investing in a pet carrier to ensure the comfort and safety of your dog your puppy. They often feel safer in a carrier when they are restrained. It is a good idea to buy one a few weeks in advance of your trip so your pooch can get used to the new surroundings.
What to look for when purchasing a carrier
- The main types are either top or front loading. Top loading can be easier if your puppy or dog is timid as he may cower towards the back of the carrier
- The majority of carriers are made of mainly moulded plastic or open wire
- Make sure that the carrier is large enough for when your puppy or dog is fully grown. Your pooch should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably
- It should also be easy to clean
- If you are planning on making trips of more than one hour, consider buying a carrier that has a clip on water bowl
- Ensure that the carrier has a secure fastening
- When transporting your dog by plane ensure that you check with your airline what their requirements specify. You may want to invest in an IATA air line approved carrier like the Vari kennel which is a high quality front loading carrier with a secure metal door and is held together with wing nuts. Some domestic airlines will also require a carrier held together with wing nuts

- Remember a puppy may find a carrier a little scary at first, use gentle encouragement and lots of yummy treats to coax them into the carrier.
