Cat Litter and Litter Trays.
Kittens are very clean animals and a litter tray should be an early purchase. They usually learn how to use it quickly, however if your kitten seems reluctant to use it, make sure it is not too close to his food and it is cleaned regularly.
The tray should be in a private but accessible place and ensure you praise your kitten when they do use the tray – either with a small treat or some extra tender loving care.
What to look for when purchasing a litter tray and cat litter
- There are a wide range of trays but the two main types are plastic open ones or covered models with an entrance flap, aimed at minimising odour.
- They should be easy to clean and tough – they need to be able to withstand frequent washing and disinfecting
- Cat litter is designed to reduce odours and absorb urine. There are many types of litter available such as clumping, crystals, paper pellets, and wood pellets. Make sure you pick a litter that both you and your cat are happy with.
- The general rule for the number is litter trays to have is "one per cat, plus one extra". This means for one cat you will need two trays, for two cats, three trays and so on.
- It is a good idea to offer different types of litter in different trays, particularly in multi cat house holds. Not all cats will like the same type of litter or litter tray, for that matter. Giving a vartiey of trays, litters and tray locations can go a long way to preventing inappropriate toileting.
