Cat Grooming Tips and Equipment
Regular grooming is important to keep your cat looking healthy. It makes them feel good and helps develop the bond between you and your cat. Brushing is also necessary to prevent hairballs and gives you the chance to check for any skin irritations or signs of fleas.
There are many grooming products to choose from so you need to ensure you make the right purchase so that you make grooming an easy and pleasurable experience for both you and your cat.
Tips for Cat Grooming
- Daily brushings will help control intestinal hairballs, reduce shedding, and create a time for bonding with your cat or kitten
- Groom your cat every day for several minutes at the same time to build up a routine. Make sure this is at a ‘quiet’ time in their day
- Multiple brushings every day are beneficial during the warmer months of the year as cats shed their winter coat
- Be careful to brush your cat gently as they have thin and sensitive skin
- Make sure you have everything you need to hand and settle the cat on a towel on your lap. It is useful to have a waste bin close to you
- Start at the head and comb down the length of your cat’s body following the direction of the hair. Pay special attention behind the ears, on the rump and under their legs. Mits are also available to ‘polish’ your cat after brushing to smooth the coat
- Regular brushing stimulates the skin and helps to distribute the natural oils that produce a healthy shining coat
- Once you have finished brushing, stroke your cat until he purrs. This also gives a final ‘polish’ and removes loose hairs
Nail trimming
It is recommended that your cat’s claws are clipped every other week if they spend a lot of time indoors. Scratching posts are a great investment for cats, particularly indoor cats. If you don’t feel confident trimming your cat’s claws, it is best to visit your local grooming parlor or veterinary surgery
